Autograph Letter Signed, 4p. octavo, New York, April 19, 1861, addressed to an aunt in Florida, it reads in part: “...I trust that the South has arms strong enough and bold enough to repel this unholy Crusade against her. What would be gained by conquering the South I do not know. This is not a war to protect the Union; a black political plot is beneath it all. After spending millions of money and sacrificing thousands of lives; after exciting a servile insurection which will drench the fair land of the South with the blood of women and children - perhaps they will cease. The North does not understand the South and the institution of the South, and vice versa....One great cause of this bitter feeling at the North is the gross misrepresentation of the Southern people by Northern papers. Even bitter, anti-slavery England acknowledges this; her chief newspaper has sent out a well known gentleman to give them truthful accounts. No one more deplores the seperation of the South from the North, more than I. Yet I would ten thousand times rather fight under the Confederate flag that now floats over the South, than join the crowd who are going to carry ruin Southward. I have an intense love for Florida...It pains me when I see what delight some people rejoice at the idea that ‘the insolent South, shall now be humbled.’...” VG.
