A 2pp. 4to. letter written in ink by Sergeant Martin V. Miller [Jackson, Mo., Sept 4th 1861], to his sister concerning pursuing Hardee's Confederate after the battle of Wilson's Creek, reading, in part: "...we reorganized our Reg't the…day after we left home. We remained a few days at Sulphur Springs, then took Iron Mountain R.R. for Pilot Knob where we lay a day or two and took up the…march in pursuit of Col. Hardee of the Confederate Army…unfortunately he proved to be the better traveler and he is now farther off…than he was at first. We arrived at this place…after a rapid march of six days. The men were so near worn out that hundred were compelled to break rank & fall back. The road was lined for miles after the Column had passed along. Some did not get in until late last night. During…three months service, we saw…the effects which War has upon a Country. Nor did I ever suppose men could carry their decorations so far as some have done on this march…I am sorry to say some men seem to have left all principle…at home,…our officers are doing all they can to suppress those lawless predators upon public property…we will not lay here but a few days when we will either go to Benton…or the Cape, so in writing you may address Cape Giradeau Mo (care Capt Estabrook, Co E, Col Cook's Reg't, Ill V.)…Hen is well & is Corporal in our company…'. Some spotting, else very good.
