A 4pp. 8vo. letter written in pencil by Sergeant Martin V. Miller [Camp in Field Miss., May 19th 1862], to his sister concerning the siege of Corinth after the battle of Shiloh, reading, in part: "…[I] have not seen Cal since he landed at Shiloh. Are now within a few miles of Corinth, Pickets have been skirmishing for several days. [We] have just received information that the Enemy are advancing on us & are lying in line of Battle expecting them every moment…we built rifle pits yesterday & are ready for them. Another week will…decide the fate of Corinth…the report of Dan Moore's conduct at Shiloh is untrue in part. He didn't help carry Henry off the field & was seen no more by any of the Company…he says he returned to the field & being unable to find the Reg't went in with some others & was wounded by a cannon ball striking a stump which he was standing by when he left the field…[and] returned to the company the next day after the battle was over…tell me who was the author of the letter to which you refer…Dan has the rheumatism & I hardly know what ails Brooks. John Roles too is at the hospital. He is laboring from the effects of a sun-stroke…the Dr. says he will recover…". Less than two weeks later Beauregard affected a tactical withdrawal from Corinth that tarnished Halleck's career due to his slowness. Near fine.
