A 2pp. 4to. letter written in ink by 2nd Lieut. Martin V. Miller [Corinth Miss., April 8, 1863], to his sister concerning his promotion to 2nd Lieutenant, reading, in part: "...you say you think I had better give up the idea of getting married for the present. I am sorry to say, under present circumstances I am compelled to take your advice unless I could be married by proxy, by telegraph or something of the kind. I have at last rec'd my commission as 2nd Lieut. It takes rank from Nov 12th 1862. I cannot tell yet whether I will draw pay on it from that date or not under a late order from the War Department. If I do not it will take some time to straighten up as I had to borrow considerable money last payday. It is going to cost me over one hundred dollars to fit myself out besides my rations which cost me very near one dollar per day, so you see there is not much to be made after all…I intend to have some Photographs taken after awhile and will send you one…". Martin gained his promotion after his company's captain was killed during the battle of Corinth, Miss. on October 3, 1862. Irregular margins with some toning, else very good.
