Manuscript Document Signed, 1p. oblong folio, Headquarters 54 Regt. Penna. Vols, Sir Johns Run, Virginia, November 1, 1862, and reads: " I do solemnly swear that I will bear true Allegiance to the United States of America and that I will serve them honestly and faith full against all their enemies or opposers whatsover, that I will in no wise aid, assist, or comfort the Rebesl by giving them information or intelligence, that I will not take up or use amrs against the Government of the United States, and that I will aid an assist the Officers thereof to teh full extent of my power, in enforcing the Laws, and in crushing out the Rebellion. The penalty of the violation of his oath being Death. So help me God...." Signed by Charles Gill, Edmund Leith, James Leith, Thos. Riley, Robert Leith, and Franklin Gill of Hampshire County, Virginia and by John Adams of Frederic County, Virginia. VG.
