Tulton" 15th New Hampshire, 4p. octavo, December 27, 1862, New Orleans, in part: "...it was pleasant sailing up the Mississippi river to see... the sugar cane and the most of all was to see the Niggers it was interesting to see them some places there would be a dozen or fifteen at a place and I should think that were all of a bigness....we have a good Captain but our lieutenant we haint got none....there is about ten thousand soldiers around here. They throw out pickdts every day they brought in two Niggers to day saturday, they think that they were spies..." VG.
