Autograph Letter Signed, “T.R. Tracy”, 53rd Pennsylvania, 4p. octavo, West Point, Virginia, May 10, 1862, and reads in part: “...I presume you have heard of our movments...We left Alexandria about two months ago for Fortress Monroe and from there to Yorktown. We did not have much trouble until we got there but when we did get to Yorktown we had something to do. We had to go on picket or work on the fortifications...we are now thirty miles beyond Yorktown on towards Richmond...when we was at Yorktown we had some pretty lively times, when we were out to work on the trenches the Rebels would throw thier shell over at us and some of them came pretty close to us. We would have some one to watch and when we saw smoke rise from their guns he would sing out...one day when we was out a big shell came over and burst rite over our head and the pieces flew all around us a small piece hit me on the finger...it went clear into the bone...” VG.
