Autograph Letter Signed by Daniel E. Worthley, Co. B, 26th Mass. Vols, 7p. octavo, pencil, New Orleans, Louisiana, February 24, 1863, and reads in part: “...We have had some excitement the past week on account of the exchange of some prisoners of war. There was a great crowd of people on the levee to see the prisoners off, and owing to their riotious disposition the provost guard (Co. H & E) was not sufficient to keep the mob back so they sent for the rest of the regt....we were all equipped and on the levee driving back the mob at first they were not inclined to go, but we got the order to charge bayonets and then the crowd began to disperse and we soon had the levee all clear...Just after dark a large no. of men, women and children got on board of the steamer Laurel Hill and came up river singing the ‘Bonnie blue flag’ and cheering for Jeff Davis. But when they got pretty near the boat containing the prisoners Co. F got aboard and then they stopped their noise pretty quick...I will send along with this letter [not included] a copy of Frank Leslie’s paper containing an illustration of our Regt. practicing street fighting...” VG.
