The Rebels kept me five days and did not give us anything to eat. When we got in our lines we had plenty to eat but no clothes...I have seen one of our Co. here who has been to Richmond a prisoner there. He said he made all enquires after James [?] and tried to find him but could learn nothing of him. I saw cousin John Fales the day before I went into the fight and had quite a talk with him...On Friday the day I was taken prisoner we marched to Centerville and form there to Bull Run. They were fighting when we got there and they put us right in...the rebels threw shot and shell so fast that our battery hitched up and drove off. After they left we were told that we must make a charge on teh railroad bank which the rebels held. Three Regs of us were to go in. We knew that there were a lot of rebels in there...the order came to fix bayonets. We advanced in line...when we charged bayonets and rushed with a yell on to the railroad. The rebels poured the shot with us fast but we drove them away and held the railroad...They shot some men after they surrendered. I expected to get killed one fellow rushed up to me with his bayonet and asked me if I wanted to die, I told him I did not care. He with sevral others marched me off...” VG.
