MEIGS, Montgomery (1816 - 1892) Union brigadier general and Quartermaster General, he buried his son in Mary Lee's rose garden at Arlington. War-Date Letter Signed, “M.C. Meigs” 1-1/2p. quarto, February 19, 1862, Washington City, Quarter-Master General’s Office, addressed to Senator W.P. Fessenden, and marked “Private” it reads in part: “...You will if you read my letters to the Secretary of War of 28th & 29th Jany. which accompanied the Estimate of deficiencies be able to appreciate the difficulty of making any estimates for this war. Its operations are not under my control. Indeed they are under no loyal mans control, for they depend upon the movements made by the enemy. The capture of Price which I have just heard will if true save us millions in Missouri. Had Beauregard & Sidney Johnston been in Fort Donelson instead of Buckner & Pillow, that capture would have saved us many millions more than it does now important as it is. The great expenditure in Missouri has been incurred in driving Price & being harassed by him in return. This is now at an end & I trust they have no other man of thesame ability for mischief to take his place...” Inlaid, else Fine.
