STONE, Charles Pomeroy (1824-1887) Union general who through the rashness of a subordinate (Col & Senator Ed Baker, who was Killed in Action), was made to bear the burden of the Union disaster at Ball’s Bluff. Rumors flew that he was suspected of treason in connection with the loss of this battle. Three months later, at midnight, on February 8, 1862, without charges being then or ever preferred, Stone was arrested and confined for 189 days. He was finally released on August 6th, assigned to the Department of the Gulf and served gallantly at Port Hudson and in the Red River campaign.War Date Order Signed, “Chs.
