A good war-date Union soldier's, 4pp. 8vo., letter written in ink on THE WAR FOR THE UNION letterhead by "N. W. James", New York Hospital, Dec. 19, 1862 to his sister concerning the battle of Fredricksburg and his wound received at Second Bull Run, reading, in part: "…there has been another fight at Fredericksburg and we were defeated as usual with the loss of about…12 to 15 thousand…it is to bad to have our army cut to pieces…it is nothing short of manslaughter…I fear that England and France [will] at once recognize the Southern Confederacy…I have got so tired of war that peace on any terms would be acceptable…my wound seems as though it will never heal. It still keeps running yet and my back pains me most all the time…tis now going on four months since I was wounded. One man had his hand taken off…a month since I came here and he has got well…". Minor soiling, else very good.
