Official Manuscript Document “General Orders No. 1”, issued by Brigadier General James Carleton, 1p. folio, Head Quarters Dept. of New Mexico, Mesilla, Arizona, January 6, 1863, and noted at bottom in War Deparment red ink, “Dept. of New Mexico, Santa Fe July 3, 1865 ‘Official’ and signed by the A.A.G., it reads in part: “I. A Military Post will be established without delay near the head waters of the Gila River, to control the Apache Indians infesting that portion of the Territory, and to afford protection to the people who are developing the Gold Region of Piuos Altos. This post will be garrisoned by two Companies of Cavalry and two of Infantry, California Volunteers. It will be known as Fort West...The exact site will be determined by a Board of Officers to be organized from the Head Quarters of the District of Arizona...Brigadier General West Commanding the District of Arizona, will immediately organize a suitable expedition to chastise what is known as Mangus Colorado’s Band of Gila Apaches. The campaign to be made by this expedition must be a vigourous one, and the punishment of that band of marauders and robbers must be thorough and sharp. The details of the best methods to achieve these results, are left entirely with General West...” Fine.On June 18, 1863 a band of gold prospectors lured Mangus into a trap and captured him turning their prisoner over to General West. West’s soldiers then heated their bayonets and burned his legs and feet before shooting him six times. He was then scalped, his head removed and boiled, with the skull being sent to an Eastern Phreneologist. General West in his report stated that Mangus had been shot while attempting an escape.
