Autograph Letter Signed, 2p. quarto, May 6, 1863, and reads in part: “...there is a lot of the fellows gone out on a scout today and I dont know whether they will fetch in anything or not but they most generaly do. One of the Darkeys asked a Delaware for two dollars that he owed him and the Delaware stabbed him they had him in jail and he got out last Saturday night and they found him at Williamsburg and fetched him back. I think he will stretch...Our fellows still holds Williamsburg and they calculate to hold it. General Hooker has crossed the Rhappahanock river and has killed from three to five hundred and has took a lot of prisoners besides...Hookers calculations is to cut off their supplies and tear up their rail road. Last friday the rebs came within three or four miles of our picket line and took off a lot of darkeys. Our fellows went out last Saturday and they seen a lot of rebel cavalry and they seen them in the night again...” VG.
