Correspondence group of Joseph Willis Cook, 8th Illinois Cavalry, they read in part: “...[Syracuse, 7/27/1862]George is in the army with McClellan on James River in Virginia, he has been in several battles, but has not been hurt yet...[Capm 3/22/63]Broth. Myron ...died on the 20th of this [month]...I provided a very good coffin & had hiim laid out in as the circumsstances would permit. I then picked out a spot where I would like to have him lay if he is obliged to remain on this disputed soil. He was buried in military edicary the chaplain addressed the platoon with the deepest of sympathy & then we proceeded to the burial and when it was over the platoon gave 36 farewell shots over the grave where the brave boy lay. He was one of the first in the great cavalry cahrge at Boonborough he was seen to fire his revolver & carbine till the enemy was out of range. I took a board & with my saber scrapped as smooth as I could & with my knife carved his company & regiment...” All VG. (5 items)
