Autograph Letter Signed, 4p. octavo, Washington, July 18, 1863, and reads in part: “...Gen Corcoran’s brigade passed through the city Thursday. The Gen. is a fine looking man. His brigade is as good one the 69th N.Y. is in it. They were going to N.Y. I suppose many troops have passed this way of late. As to the war it seems as if the Union arms had of late achieved some great victories. The operations of our armies from teh 1st to th 8th of July resulted in the loss of 80,000 soldiers to the rebel army with a small loss on our side in comparison. Our armies are working hard this summer. The Government seems to be putting forth with its strength in an effective way. Another assault is being made on Charleston. The island known as Morris or Morrison from which the rebels bombarded Fort Sumter has been captured with its batteries. It is strange that a mixture of rowdies and secesh in some of our Western cities should think that they can overthrow the Gov. They will find by sad experience that they cannot successfully resist authority of the United States...” More. VG.
