Autograph Letter Signed, “J.A. Stewart Co. E 28 Reg. Wis. Vol.”, 4p. octavo, St. Charles, Arkansas, January 18, 1863, with cover, and reads in part: “...we were ordered to accompany the expedition about to invade Ark. The expedition composed about 40,000 men and about eighty transports and gunboats at the mouth of the Ark & White river which are only a few miles apart. The expedition separted 15,000 men with 35 transports and two gunboats came up the White river the balance went up the Ark. river and attacked Ark Post quite a strong place on that river and captured it with 7,000 prisoners... I have not heard from them since they left the Ark Post...This expedition does not treat the rebels as friends but appropriate their goods to our use where they can be found and in many places burn what we cannot take with us...” Fine.
