Clark” Captain 8th Iowa, taken POW at Shiloh, 3-1/2p. octavo, Benton Barracks, Missouri, March 7, 1863, with cover, it reads in part: “...Today got word taht the Union Brigade would soon come here, then our whole Co. will be together...My vengeful feelings are the hardest to keep down, when thinking of those in the free North, who would prefer giving up to that Tyrant, Jeff. Davis who is trying to establish a government the corner stone of which is oppression...We who are engaged in the struggle are fighting, as it were, in self defense yes, contending for the pricinples that are, or ought to be, dearer than life, Liberty, Freedom from the oppression of teh basest of tyrants. The great battle of liberty is now progressing & tearful eyes & heaving breasts are noting the progress of Freedom’s Warriors....” VG.
