An interesting war-date ink inscribed 1p. 4to., Union circular, Sandy Hook, Md., July 16, 1863 concerning the upgrading of Slocum's 12th Corps, Army of the Potomac after the battle of Gettysburg. Issued by command of Major General Henry Slocum, in part: "…division and other commanders will avail themselves of the present opportunity to place their commands in the best possible condition for the field. All stragglers should at once be made to rejoin their regiments, and the troops be fully supplied with clothing, arms and equipment…". Heavily engaged in the battle of Gettysburg, it would take the 12th Corps months to recover from the engagement. Interestingly, the 12th Corps ordnance officer Capt. Gilbert M. Elliott was killed later that year during the battle of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., Nov. 24, 1863. Near fine
