A interesting ward-date Union officer's, 1p. 4to., letter written in ink by Capt. Robert Jordan 84th New York Vols. (Brooklyn Fire Zouaves), National Hotel, Washington, Nov. 12, 1863 to brother officer Adjutant John Vliet concerning the issuance of medals for the officers of the regiment, reading, in part: "…I have in my possession eight medals engraved for the following officers. Col. Fowler, Major Head, Capt's. Baldwin & McNeil, Lt's. Vliet, Cardona, Pearce, Tinker. I paid freight on them…making all four dollars I have paid on them…viz. Two dollars for the letters on Col. De Bevoise medal and insurance & freight…nine of the medals are paid for…there is owing to me therefore fifty-five dollars…the express company decline[s] to forward them to the regiment. Mr. Rogers does not intend to leave them here until the army has settled down…let the officers decide what I shall do with them…". Worthy of further research to determine the origin in issuing these medals. Near fine.
