A 4pp. 4to, ink inscribed letter datelined: “on board Steamer Navigator, Mar. 25, 1864 to Susie, his cousin, reading, in very small part: “…we are steaming…passed Fort Donaldson are bound…to…the 15th Army Corps…at Hunterville & all along the RR from Stevenson to Decater on the Tenn. River…as a regt we have been home & enjoyed a 30 days furlough…young & old Rich & Poor, Pious & wicked all seemed to vie with each other to see who could make us enjoy our furlough most & best. Some poor miserable specimens of humanity of the Copperhead architect…alone, looked on with serpent Eye & mulish leer & so passed by…not one would own to being a Copperhead…but they are spotted--marked men are they & some women too. We have recruited near 300 since we went home…half…not over 18…50 of them not over 16…they are all patriotism & want to have it to say they did something to help in this struggle for the life of our Government…we have just passed Clarksville…is a fine place…many…Yankee soldier boys will, after this war is over, settle in the south…I could pick…out a place that would suit me to a charm…lots of these young widows & southern girls will yet associate…with many a northern…vandal now carrying the gun to subjugate them & laying waste their sunny land. These southern Ladies are not invulnerable to the attacks of Cupids forces…I’ll be your Uncle John a fortnight if not longer.” Minor toning, and spotting, else very good.
