A 2pp. 4to, ink inscribed letter datelined: Chattanooga, Tn., May 5, 1864, to his father, reading, in very small part: “…we are again on the move…I was detailed to take charge of those not able to…I left Woodville on Monday with my crew…our Regt has reorganized…only one Divi is left…in [the] vicinity of Knoxville. The 4th AC under Genl Howard…on Monday Kilpatrick with the Cav. & Mounted Infty had a brush with the Rebs & drove them out of Ringgold…as far as Tunnel Hill…at night he…fell back to R(ringgold) & the Rebs followed him & drove him out Tuesday. Supported by Infty & Artillery he pitched into them again & they drove the Rebs beyond Tunnel Hill…yesterday the advance of 4th & 23rd AC’s reached R(ringgold) & the Tunnel…this morning…the Rebs are falling back…our AC(or 3 Divis) with part of 16thAC (2nd Divis under Dodge) are to march across from Bridgeport…16 trains came in during the night loaded with troops…Genl Sherman is driving up…where ever he can hit the Rebs…we will soon drive them to the wall…soon you may expect to hear stirring news from our Army…God do unto them &…4 fold has they have done to our brothers of the Union Army…Sis, I send you a rough hewn ring, dug yesterday on Lookout Mountain, right where Our regt was posted and fought on the night of the 24th of Nov. It is out of a laurel root & if I could I would like to send the whole root to you and also hands to have it made up into rings…make them into a shape of a shield or heart shape…your brother, John”.
