Autograph Letter Signed, “Reuben Ruth” 4p. quarto, Camp Rouly, October 7, 1864, and reads in part: “...The service don’t agree with me. When I came in teh army first I weighted 130 pounds, now I only wiegh 155 pounds so you see I gained 25 pounds on hard tack and sow belly...got to Pittsburg on teh 1st of Oct. At Chambersburg we were joined by the 201 Penna. Infantry...we are now encamped along the side of the State Penitentiary surrounded by the city on all sides...There is a battery of N.Y. artillery, and a battalion of Pa. Infantry and General Couch’s Independent Scouts of which your humble servant claims a membership...Now about the election, some people think Mac and some old Abe. There is a United States hospital here with seven hundred wounded and sick soldiers. The vote is Old Abe 650 Little Mumpy 50. We had a vote in camp yesterday of 600 men Old Abe 575 little 25...” VG.
