Autograph Letter Signed, “H. H. Rice”, 4p. quarto, Satterlee Hosptial, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, December 1864, with cover addressed to “Prof. A. Benedict…Mass. Ave. Bet. 13th & 14th South-side….Washington, D.C.” and reads in part: “…I am waiting eagerly to know the views of Continental Europe on that greatest victory of the War. How about ‘Intervention’ Widowed Neutrality &c. &c….War taxes wont end with this administration and Copperheads will have sorer heads when Government reestablished. We pitch into their sympathizing friends across the water. Now that we have our hands in the dough we may as well call in the account which has been so long accumulating against Uncle Bull…The two debts will be tried in separate courts, the 1st at Her Majesties Court in Canada, the 2d at His Majesties Court in Mexico and there is where we shall gain a decided advantage…I intend to remain the service long but not always as a Lieut. Having know the practical as well as theatrical part of the Cavy service…” VG.
