GREGG, David M. (1833-1916) West Point graduate, became colonel of the 8th Pa in January 1862, and carved out a distinguished fighting record. His performance during the Peninsula Campaign earned him promotion to Brig. General. On the final day of Gettysburg he thwarted JEB Stuart's planned attack on the Union rear, but much of the credit instead went to Brig. Gen. George Armstrong Custer, who was temporarily assigned to Gregg's sector. Gregg was promoted to Maj. General in the summer of 1864. His resignation on Feb. 3, 1865, is one of the mysteries of the Civil War. Manuscript Letter Signed, "D. McM. Gregg", 1p. quarto, August 31, 1864, Head Quarters, 2nd Division, addressed to Brig. General Seth Williams, and reads: "...I have the honor to recommend that Capt. H.S. Thomas be relieved from duty as Act'g Asst. Inspector of the 1st Brigade of this division and that Capt. W. B. Robbins, 1st NJ Cavalry be appointed to that position. This application is made in consequence of the consolidation of the recruits and veterans fo the 1st Pa. Cavalry into 4 companies, Capt. Thomas, the Sr. officer present of those retained for duty with the companies, is entitled to the command of his new battalion. The organization of the battalion should be made directly under the superintendence of a competent and experienced officer..." Fine.
