Autograph Letter Signed, “Hugh M. Ives” 6th Connecticut Infantry, 4p. octavo, Malvern Hills, Virginia, August 21, 1864, with cover and reads in part: “...We started Sat. Aug 13th 10 1/2 PM marched all night arriving at Deep Bottom 3 AM Sunday 14th. We fought the ‘Cons’ all day 14th & the 15th the same charging with fixed bayonetts upon a 6 gun battery & 2 mortars under a shower of grape & cannister . Drove the enemy out of their works spiked the guns followed them up rested a little this night next day the 16th without any food we fought them again gaining complete success still driving them before us into their formidable works at a place called ‘White Oak Farms’ here we charged again upon them driving them like ‘chaff before the wind’ taking over 600 prisoners having shot Brig. Gen. Giradey through the forhead. Brig Gen. Chambliss in the groin (Chambliss is a Cavalry Gen.) sinced died and a Major Gen. I did not learn his name...the 18th we had a sever fight with Longstreets & Hills Corps whipping them...fought again the 19th with success but great loss of life upon our side...on the 20th we had another hard battle driving them into the woods, having accomplished all we wished we commenced a retreat Sat night...Now thinkg for one moment of your son & Bro. engagin in this bloody strife. A thousand shall fall at tehy side and ten thousand at the right hand but it shall not come nigh thee...I am safe and unharmed...Brother, never enter the Army under any consideration whatever...” Fine.
