Autograph Letter Signed, “J.V. Young” Captain, 11th West Virginia Infantry, 3p. quarto, Strausburg, Frederick County, Virginia, October 12, 1864, with cover, in part: “...marched to...Fisherville...to our surprise we was attacked by the Hampton Legion of some 500 cavalry and 12 pieces of artillery. We fought them all that evening and the Battle commenced early next morning the 9th and before night we had captured 11 pieces of artillery 400 Johnnies twenty-seven wagons loaded with ammunition. Horses ambulances and almost everything the great Hampton had with him and sent him whirling up the Valley faster than he came down. This is another great blow on the Southern Confederacy. Hampton’s cavalry was the pride and flower of Virginia. As I have said before we have destroyed almost everything in this great Valley that man or beast could live on. We have burned all the mills, barns, grain, hay and has drove off all their stock even down to their milking cows and calves. How the citizens is to live is a problem for them but not for me. There is no more guarding Rebels houses, gardens and cornfields. Our Genl. leaves that for old Mosby to do but he can’t do it right to the satisfaction of the Rebel citizens...” More. VG.
