Autograph Letter Signed by a Lieutenant Colonel, 2p. quarto, pencil, on Head Quarters Middle Military Division lettersheet, Cedar Creek, October 20, 1864, addressed to Colonel Oliver Edwards of the 37th Massachusetts, and reads in part: “...Our orders of yesterday was the grand finale of Early’s Army, and the rebs attempted advance in teh Shenanadoah Valley. When Gen. Sheridan go to the Army he found the troops between Middletown and Newton falling back to Winchester he soon took them in hand, and just in time to repulse an attack by Jubal Early. The Genl. though he would see Early and try and go him some better, so at him we went. The whole army attacked making a left half wheel the Cavly turning the Enemys blanks, and every thing advancing I can only say that Winchester and Fishers Hill...and the rebs ran in confussion leaving in our hand 48 pieces of artillery, caissons, ambulances, & wagons to numerous to mention and battle flags were also captured...Our Cavy ran the rebs this morning from Fisher Hill where they had a small rear guard to beyond Edenburg...” Followed by a list of casualties that includes: Gen. Wright was slightly wounded...Genl. Ricketts wounded...also one of Genl. Wrights Staff Offrs killed...” VG.
