PORTER, David Dixon (1813-1891) Commanding Officer, U.S. Mississippi River Squadron, 1862-64; Commanding Officer, U.S. North Atlantic Blockading Squadron, 1864-65.Partly-printed Document Signed with endorsement “David D. Porter”, 3p. quarto, November 20, 1864, “U.S.S. Iosco Off Wilmington, N.C.” addressed to Prize Master Ware, and is signed at bottom “John Guest Comr Comdg U.S. Steamer Iosco.”, it reads in part: “...You will take charge ofthe Schooner Sybil, captured on the 20th day of November, 1864, by the U.S. Steamer Iosco, and proceed with the said prize to the port of New York...You will, without delay, after reporting , call upon the U.S. District Attorney at New York, show him these instructions, and give him all the information in your power respecting the circumstances connected with the capture of the British Schooner Sybil...” Two endorsements follow. VG.The Sybil at time of capture was carrying 307 bales of cotton. The Iosco after this incident went on to join in the first amphibious assault on Fort Fisher.
