A great war-date Union soldier's 4pp. 8vo., letter written in pencil by Pvt. James Peden, Co. F, 104th Ohio Vols., [n. p.], June 8, 1864 to his female friend concerning his regiment's role in the beginning of the Atlanta campaign, reading, in part: "…we are fiting…every day. We drove the rebs about 80 miles in to Georgia. We had a hard fight at Tunnel Hill & one still harder at Rasacka [Resaca]. We lost a good many men but not…many as the Johnny Rebs. We charged their breastworks. The contest lasted about 30 minutes…the two armies was very close together…varying from 10 to 40 feet apart. I shall not say anything about the field after the fight was over now…we are in the Allatona Mountains following after the scared Johnnys. They are retreating towards Atlanta…from this point…30 miles…they will stand…[at] Lost Mountain…we must & will whip them…the armies of Sherman & Thomas & Hooker will wipe rebellion out…[the] officers & privates…think we will be in Atlanta on…the 4 of July…there was 2 killed out of Co. F 104th reg & 4 slightly wounded…the cry with all true men is down with traitors…". Peden served throughout the remainder of the war and was mustered out at the close of the war. Period purple ink stains negligibly affect the content, else very good.
