McPHERSON, James B. (1828-1864) Union major general who as the commander of the Army of Tennessee was killed by a Confederate sharpshooter during the battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864. Pre-war partly-printed D. S. "Jas. B. McPherson" adding rank as witness on a quartermaster roll for the second quarter of 1854, 1p. folio, [New York Harbor, June 1854], for "Company A Engineers," reading, in part: "We…acknowledge to have received…the several articles…set opposite our respective names…". Worthy of further research since many of the soldiers no doubt served in the Civil War. Usual folds, else very good
