Autograph Letter Signed, Edgar G. Bennet, 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery, ID'd from correspondence, 3p. octavo, September 20, 1864, "Mortar Battery, Headquarters 'K' Company, Near Petersburg," with cover addressed to Mary Marsh in Burlington, Connecticut, it reads in part: "...I have not written before since the 16th for I have not had time for it is all the time shelling the Rebs night and day. I have charge of the Battery I am in and have two 8 inch Mortars. I have to take charge of them and then of the ammunition for them and our having to fire so much. It takes all the time there is for one here. I have not had any time to rest since the night of the 16th and last night it was determines to have some sleep when the Rebs opened up on us and kept it nearly all night. The soldiers all are having a hard time now. The trenches are full every night for they expect an attack. I begin to think that this campaign will settle the fighting for this year as both Grant and Lee are preparing for a great Battle on the Weldon Railroad....it has been reported that Grant captured 800 prisoners yesterday morning..." VG. Includes fragments from the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery flag.
