A nice war-date Union officer's, 4pp. 4to., letter written in ink by an unknown officer in the Army of the James, Near Petersburg, Va., June 26, 1864 to his mother concerning the opening of the Petersburg siege, reading, in part: "…we officers are expected to take full rations…I sometimes look at myself through a pocket glass after a short ride through the dust and taking skin and lair together conclude that I belong…to Burnside's glorious Ethiopian phalanx…we can't tell black from white…the dust is dreadful…I was surprised and saddened to hear that Spencer was wounded. I learned through a letter from Carrie first. I saw name the same day in the papers…that was a terrible day for the 2nd Corps and lately they have met with utter destruction [and] some 15,000 prisoners…Henry Audley [?] Reg was to blame…they also lost 6 pieces of artillery. The Rebs…carrie[d] mightily over that affair…it looks like a siege here. [there] is not much fighting now a days except constant skirmishing. We lose a good many men by their sharpshooting…". Worthy of further research. Light soiling, else very good.
