Autograph Letter Signed, “Z. Paddock Jr.” 48th New York Infantry, 4p. quarto, Office of A.R.Q.M. 48th Regt. Near Petersburg, July 5, 1864, and reads in part: “...I have had a deal of faith in the present campaign up to the last week...Genl. Grant or no other man can do more than has been done iwth the means and resistance he has had. The average loss of our army since the opening of this years campaign seems almost incredible, yet I am assured by good authority it will not fall short of eighty thousand and our splendid army has dwindled to a cipher. Nothing but a speedy draft or conscription act in order to augment the number of wearied and worn troops can now crush our enemies the present year. I am pleased at the repeal of the 300 dollar act as now we shall get men not money....England & France are again meditating an interference and we may have to contend with all and sacrifice life liberty and homes in order to become again an independent nation. Notwithstanding the croaking of such papers as the Herald Times, world, and others relative to Chase. I think his resignation ought not to have been accepted. I think no man has been more effective or honest in his discharge of his duties than Sec. Chase. Our present position in front and around Petersburg ahs been one of danger, trial suffering and death with but little advance or effect. A continious shelling and rifle firing has been going on from either side. Killing a few and wounding meany. Our guns no doubt could destroy the city at anytime but the holding of the city would only be for a few hourse when the Rebel batteries from the other side of the River would shell us out...My horse belongs to Uncle Sam and I have to use him constantly. I have however a captured horse which no one claims which I keep and expect to bring home with me...” About VG.
