P.V. on picket near Leesburg, Va, November 5, 1862, and reads in part: “...Our regt. is on picket to day, companies H, G, and K are on the reserve...We have been assigned to Gen. Burnsides Corps, it is the 9th Corps of the U.S. Army. We used to be in Gen. Heintzleman’s Corps. ...Capt. Nelson who lately returned from Titusville, said that there was a report there that at the Battle of Fair Oaks, after the Col and our captain had been wounded, that Wirt Chase had taken command of the Regt. and had 3 horses shot under him. I dont see where in the world such reports originate....I would like to see how the draft works on some of the Young men of Crawford County. Wm Wirt Chase and Sergt. James Houghtaling of our Co. are in Titusville to recruit for our Company...” VG.
