Autograph Letter Signed, “William McAdams” Lieutenant, 59th Illinois Infantry, 3p. folio, Pulaski, Tennessee, January 1, 1865, and reads in part: “...The year just past has been an eventful one. Many hard battles have been fought and very many brave boys have been killed and very many others wounded and maimed, and many hearts have been made to mourn. Let us return thanks to our maker for his mercy and goodness...who knows but before the end of the year 1865 that we will be a United and happy People...The Rebel cause has certainly suffered greatly of late. Their cause is a desperate one and they will employ desperate means before they will give up the struggle. There is strong talk about their arming the Negroes to fight for their cause. Genl Lee’s wants more men, Genl Hood wants more men; They now only have one army that amounts to anything and that is at Richmond. Grant and Sherman can certainly take Richmond and the day is ours....Our Corps followed the Rebels from this place toward Florence, and I learn today that our Corps is now marching for Huntsville, Ala,...I am anxious to get my papers completed so that I can make an effort to resign...” Fine.
