EMORY, William Hemsley (1811-1887) Union general who led the 19th Army Corps & ater Dept of West Virginia. Autograph Letter Signed, “W.H. Emory” 3p. octavo, Cumberland, Maryland, October 23, 1865, addressed to U.S. Senator John Creswell, and reads in part: “...I am informed Genl Grant is to leave Washington on Thursday to be absent some time. Before he goes, I would be glad if you would call his attention to my claims to be appointed a Brevet Major General in the Regular, so that when the order which I am told is impending to muster out all the Volunteers I may not be obliged to be submitted to the mortification of losing one of my stars. My record entitles me to it and I think if his attention was called to it, he would not hesitate to recommend it to the Sect of War who I am told leases the nominatin for appiontments and Brevets in teh regular service, very much if not entirely to the Lt. General...” More. VG.
