Autograph Letter Signed, 4p. octavo, pencil, McClellan U.S.A. Hospital, Philadelphia, April 16, 1865, and reads in part: “...how sadly the joyous feelings that we were enjoying in consequence of our great victories are dampned by the cruel news that comes to us on the lightening wings from Washington the assassination of our President, beloved by every loyal heart throughout the whole nation. The monster spirit of Slavery, even in its dying agonies has exhibited the true hype of its character, the Copperhead has taken the malignant charcter and guise of the assassin and in the dark strikes his unsuspecting victim, the Bowie knife & revolver are true emblems & badges of that sprit, in teh cowardly act that strikes down our chief Magistrate with wife and family around him, while unsuspecting an enemy, we see exhibited in true colors the very same principle, that has taken some loved one as a victim from almost every family circle in our land...” Much more.
