Autograph Letter Signed, “William H. Green Co. F, 45 Reg. New York State Veteran Volunteers”, 3p. folio, Nashville, Tennessee, March 4, 1865, in part: “...to day is a great day in Washington I suppose on account of the President’s taking his seat or some other nonsensical thing....the Zollicoffer building which will hold about 8,000 men...is three stories high it was built by the General of that name but it is now used as a barracks for Regiments passing through the city...at the time of the fight it was crowded full with Rebel prisoners they have since been removed to other places further North. The windows are all pulled out and it is all disfigured...the soldiers got short of fire wood and so used the windows and blinds...You say you have sent my Discharge...I shall want it when I get home to go with my Company Roll....there was a little fellow in here today for deserting he was a private he is 14 years old he was not over 5 foot if he was that. He has got a hard sentence he has got ten years in prison...The women have a great habit around here that is smoking cigars and chewing tobacco. There was a woman in the office today and she came up to the fire where I was to warm herself and when warming herself she spit out some tobacco spit in to the fire. I did not think it was tobacco spit at first but when she spit the second time I was sure of it....” VG.
