Two onion skin copy sheets, quarto, containing the text of Grant’s orders by telegraph to his Corps commanders, City Point, February 21, 1865, and reads in part: “...The following paragraphs are taken from todays Richmond Papers, South Carolina, Charleston. On last Thursday night the 16th inst. our forces evacuated Charleston and it is believed that the enemy took possession...Many guns must have bombarded by our troops but it is consoling to konw that the Yankees got little else. There was no cotton at Charleston to gladden Lincoln’s heart...A Yankee force from Newbern some (500) strong passed through Greenville yesterday, when last heard from were, advancing on Tarboro...Genl Baker is after them...It was reported that a large Yankee Cavalry force was advancing on Salisbury from East Tenn....The Senate Bill to raise (200,000) negroe soliders will it is understood be passed to day in Secret Session. It is said a similar Bill passed the House of Representatives in Secret Session yesterday...” VG.
