THOMAS, Lorenzo (1804-1875) Early in the Civil war he became adjutant-general of the army by succession, and was afterward especially assigned to the duty of organizing volunteer troops, particularly the colored regiments. He was commissioned brigadier-general on Aug. 3, 1861, brevetted major-general, U. S. A., on March 13, 1865.Partly-printed Document Signed, “L. Thomas” 1p. quarto, Natchez, Mississippi, February 18, 1865, addressed to Lt. U.S. Wheeler, 125 U.S. Colored Infantry, and reads in part: “...I forward herewith your appointment of First Lieutenant in the One Hundred Twenty Fifth Regiment, United States Colored Infantry...” VG.
