Post Office Department” lettersheet with printed headling crossed out by Melton, July 24, 1865, Chester, South Carolina, and reads in part: “...we are doing Provost duty our Capt. is Provost Martial of this District. There is only two companies of us our company and one company of the 129 Ind. under Capt. Bennett...we have a very good time here generally and make the old rebs walk the chalk...I hardly know whether I would know how to treat them civil...Excuse me for writing a letter on rebel paper it was all that I had out of my office...” VG.
