An interesting war-date Union soldier's 3pp. 8vo., letter written in ink by Pvt. Edward Hindmarch, Co. E, 126th New York Vols., Camp Distribution, Va., Nov. 29, 1863 to his mother describing a harrowing voyage back to the front on broad a ship, reading, in part: "…I left Governors Island Tuesday…we took the steam ship at New York Harbor…all the way to Alexandria…we had about two hundred deserters. They…put them down in the lowest cabin. They was the hardest men I ever saw…Tuesday night they tried to set the ship on fire. They had it a blazen and the guard saw them. Thursday night the ship run on a sand bar…". Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover. Hindmarch enlisted in the 126th New York on August 14, 1862 and was captured along with the majority of his regiment at Harper's Ferry during the Antietam campaign. Upon his released he served with the regiment during the battle of Gettysburg and was discharged in June 1865. Hindmarch's phonetic spelling has been corrected. Some toning, else very good.
