HANCOCK, WINFIELD SCOTT, (1824-1886) Major General. In the fight of July 3, at Gettysburg, he commanded the left center, the main point assailed by the Confederates, and was shot from his horse, being dangerously wounded, but remained on the field until he saw that the enemy's attack had been repulsed by his corps. Autograph Letter Signed, “Winfd. S. Hancock” 1p. octavo, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, November 28, 1866, addressed to Governor Fletcher of Illinois, it reads in part: “...I may stop at Jefferson in a few days...I will make some inquires concerning the officer you refer to. I do not recognize his name. He may belong with 7 Inft. which has lately gone to Texas. I had hoped that the election being safely disposed of we would have peace and quiet. IF we have not, I think you can readily bring the [?] to terms without calling upon us...” About VG.
