A very rare war-date CDV of black Private Nelson J. Campbell, Co. M, 6th United States Colored Cavalry. Campbell is strikingly posed wearing his regulation shell jacket, gauntlets, and eagle buckle with accoutrements while holding a sword. The 6th U. S. C. C. was organized in late 1864 and served with Maj. Gen. Stoneman during a raid into southwestern Virginia on Dec. 10-29, 1864 were they helped capture and destroy the Confederacy's much coveted lead mines on Dec. 17, 1864. Afterwards, they served throughout Kentucky and Arkansas for the remainder of the war and into the beginning of the Reconstruction period until they were mustered out of service on April 15, 1866. No photographer's imprint on the verso while his name appears in very light period pencil at the lower margin on the front of the mount. Some toning, and soiling to the mount, else very good. A truly historic image since very few identified black soldier images exist from the Civil War.
