A rare war-date newspaper announcing the capture and death of John Wilkes Booth the assassin of Abraham Lincoln. A good clean issue of THE NEW YORK HERALD, April 28, 1865, totaling eight large folio pages. Bold black block lettering proclaims: BOOTH'S END. THE SHOOTING OF THE ASSASSIN OF THE PRESIDENT. HIS BODY IN WASHINGTON. HAROLD CAPTURED AND IN IRONS. Printed just days after Booth was gunned down this newspaper gives a full accounting of events surrounding his pursuit and death. Other headlines read: BOOTH'S FLIGHT FROM WASHINGTON. THE KILLING OF BOOTH. SKETCHES OF THE ASSASSINS. Lincoln's wake. Headlines on the assassins read: THE ASSASSINS. ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS REWARD FOR THEM. CAPTURE OF ATZEROT. PROBABLE ARREST OF BOOTH. HE IS BELIEVED TO BE THE ASSASSIN OF THE PRESIDENT. INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT BOOTH AND HIS FAMILY. Understandably, news of the war' end took a back seat in this edition. Some of the with other headlines reading: CANBY. EXPECTED SURRENDER OF THE REBEL GENERAL DICK TAYLOR. THE PLUNDER OF JEFF DAVIS AND CABINET MOVING SOUTH FROM GREENSBORO. A wonderful first-hand look at the tumultuous events which occurred in April 1865. Usual toning with some paper loss at the center fold, else very good.
