Alvin C. York (1887-1964) was an American soldier of World War I who single-handedly captured 132 German prisoners and was awarded a Medal of Honor. He was immortalized by Gary Cooper in the movie Sergeant York. This bronze medal, 1-1/2”x1”, with a 1” silver cloth hanger with pin back on verso, was awarded to York immediately after World War I. The medal depicts three French railroad cars, one bearing a horse with a soldier and marked in French: “40 Men 8 Horses”, with a second armed French soldier in the foreground. The medal was donated by York to a “Navy Relief Fund Auction” c. 1940. VG.
