GARDNER, ALEXANDER (1821 - 1882) American photographer employed by Mathew Brady to undertake studio work, and later produced what are considered to be the finest, most striking Civil War battlefield views of the period, bringing the horror of the war home to the North. Gardner later would become official photographer for the Union Pacific Railroad. Very rare A.L.S. "Alex Gardner", lp. 4to. on ornate Masonic Mutual relief Association letterhead, Washington, mar. 30, 1878 to J. K. Wheeler. In part: " ... Your favor of the 13th ... was laid before the Board of Directors at the last meeting, they think with you that there can be little doubt but the daughter of Edward Wadsworth is the Miss Martha Wadsworth of Hartford, Conn ... Inclosed find check for $1.50. I have notified Brom Wadsworth that when a guardian is appointed I will send draft and receipts to you trusting you will excuse the liberty ... " Boldly penned, spindle holes at extreme top margin, else near fine condition. The Wadsworth family were among the founders of Hartford, and were major philanthropists. Gardner is rare, extremely so in autograph letters, signed.
