SCHWAB, Charles M. (1862-1939) Schwab helped create, and became the president of the U.S. Steel Company in 1897. In 1903 Schwab left U.S. Steel and in 1904 founded Bethlehem Steel Corporation. He also became the president and chairman of the board from 1904-1916. During that time productivity continued to increase. At the beginning of World War I, when the annual steel making capacity was 1.1 million tons, Bethlehem Steel employed 15,600 people. In 1916 Schwab retired as president, but remained chairman of Bethlehem Steel. Autograph clipped from a letter “CM Schwab”. Fine.
