ARRIOLA, Gus (b. 1917) Cartoonist.Original three panel daily comic strip of ‘Gordo’ inscribed and signed, 1p. 20”x6-1/4”. There is a 10-5 in the first panel and the strip appeared in 1963. Arriola conceived the idea of doing a strip with an ethnic group. The result was Gordo, whose subject was the love life of a paunchy, middle-aged Mexican, who was guardian of his nephew, Pepito, the strip began in Nov. 1941 and ran until March 2, 1985. The cartoon deals with a man who is sporting new clothes to go to barber college and Pepito say ‘Barbering should be easy for you to learn - you been trimming my oncle Gordo for many years!” The man states that he likes his new loafers and a pig and a dog remark that they make special shoes for them now.
